Death of David “Doc” Schroeder

September 30, 2015

David “Doc” Schroeder passed away on Sept. 27, 2015 at the age of 91. He was a well-respected church leader and professor of New Testament and ethics at Canadian Mennonite Bible College (now Canadian Mennonite University), where he taught for 30 years. He retired in 1990. Born in Halbstadt, Man., Schroeder graduated from Altona High School in 1943 and for the next few years served as a conscientious objector rather than joining the military. After a bout with polio in 1953, Schroeder returned to school. As a professor with a deep heart for the Mennonite church, Schroeder was often in demand as a teacher for congregational and church settings. He married Mildred Bartel in 1949. They had three children: Dorothy (Don) Sugimoto, Lynette (Ernie) Wiebe and Alan (Ruth) Schroeder; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at Bethel Mennonite Church in Winnipeg on Oct. 2, 2015.
